AMMAN, Jordan, April 6 (UPI) -- A Jordanian state security court Tuesday sentenced eight people to death for killing a U.S. diplomat in Amman in October 2002.
Among those convicted is Salem bin Sweid, a Libyan, who fired the eight shots that killed Laurence Foley in front of his home in Amman.
The court sentenced to death in absentia Ahmed Fadel al-Khalayle, better known as Abu Misaab al-Zarqawi, for planning the assassination.
It was the second death penalty issued against al-Zirqawi since 2000 when he was convicted of belonging to al-Qaida network of Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden. A leading al-Qaida operative, Zirqawi is believed to be based in Iraq.
Two other defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging between 15 and six years and a third was acquitted.
Of the 11 defendants five were sentenced in absentia.
