Columnist Pitts wins Pulitzer

NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- Leonard Pitts Jr. of the Miami Herald was awarded the Pulitzer Pride Monday in the distinguished commentary category for his people columns.

The Pulitzer panel at Columbia University in New York recognized Pitts for "his fresh, vibrant columns that spoke, with both passion and compassion, to ordinary people on often divisive issues."

Other finalists in the category included Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times and Cynthia Tucker of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
