MIAMI, April 5 (UPI) -- Investigators in Miami were focusing Monday on a large bolt that broke off, causing a fair's midway ride accident that injured seven people, one critically.
Jessica Riobe, 16, a student at a Miami middle school, was in critical condition Monday at Jackson Memorial Medical Center, The Miami Herald said.
Two of the girl's friends were also injured, but not as seriously. Four people waiting in line were hit by debris, but their injuries were not considered serious.
The accident occurred Friday night at the Miami-Dade County Fair's Gravitron ride, known as "Old Blue." Investigators said the nine-inch bolt might have broken off the rapidly spinning ride. One panel of the ride's walls gave way and ejected the riders who normally are pinned to the wall by centrifugal force.
"The next step is to have our engineer look at it," said Mike Rinhart, chief investigator for the Florida Agriculture Department's bureau of fair ride inspections.
