Talks held on Britain's immigration policy

LONDON, April 4 (UPI) -- Downing Street has confirmed that Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair is to hold an immigration summit.

The Sunday Telegraph reported Sunday that talks will be held Tuesday with ministers from the Home Secretary, Foreign Office, the Department of Work and Pensions and the Attorney General.

"The Prime Minister wants to ensure better cross-government coordination on a complex and important area of policy. (Home Secretary) David Blunkett welcomes the added focus," Blair's spokesman said.

"The prime minister believes that there have always been abuses over many governments but a different world makes it even more important that they are tackled vigorously."

Security service officials have also been invited to discuss problems within the immigration system, according to the spokesman.

"The prime minister does not accept that the immigration system is in chaos," the spokesman added. "However, he does believe that there has been a decline in public confidence in the integrity of some of the processes -- that has to be addressed and rooting out abuse is vital to achieving this."
