Egypt and Syria consider an Arab summit

CAIRO, April 4 (UPI) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Syrian President Bashar Assad held talks Sunday in Cairo concerning convening an Arab summit.

Egyptian officials said Assad arrived in the Egyptian capital ahead of a similar visit by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for talks on holding the Arab summit as soon as possible.

Tunisia last week cancelled a scheduled March 29-30 meeting of Arab leaders citing differences among the 22-members of the Arab League over democratic reforms.

Syrian diplomatic sources said Assad was trying to mediate between Mubarak and his Tunisian counterpart, Zain al-Abedine bin Ali, by arranging a meeting.

They said such a meeting was designed to reduce tensions between the two men. The sources said Mubarak and bin Ali might meet next week if the Egyptian president stops in Tunis en route to the United States.
