Revolving door safety questioned

TOKYO, April 2 (UPI) -- The death of a 6-year-old boy in Tokyo has raised questions in Japan about the government's safety standards relating to revolving doors.

The boy died last week after being crushed by a revolving door in downtown Tokyo, the Mainichi Shimbun reported Friday.

Building safety manuals compiled by the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government do warn about the potential danger of revolving doors.

But the ministry is now being accused of not updating or revising these safety standards.

"It's regrettable that such a serious accident has occurred. Since the manuals are not legally binding, we can't force the industry to abide by them. However, we thought that relevant industry organizations (would) respect the manual," a government official said.
