Court refuses to delay impeachment trial

SEOUL, April 2 (UPI) -- A South Korean court Friday refused to delay the impeachment trial of President Roh Moo-hyun, accused of election law violations and involvement in scandals.

The delay was sought by lawyers for the National Assembly, which wants the trial put off until after the April 15 elections, the Korea Times reported.

After denying the request, the constitutional court set April 9 for the next hearing on the case. The impeachment motion passed the national assembly on March 12.

The assembly lawyers also asked the court's nine justices to review records and question witnesses for a ruling to decide whether the suspended president can continue with his duties. A ruling on that will be issued next week.

Roh's attorneys want the impeachment dismissed, alleging the assembly didn't follow proper procedures when it passed the impeachment motion.
