Illinois rejects federal overtime law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., April 1 (UPI) -- Illinois lawmakers have rebuffed a new Bush administration overtime restriction law to keep things as they are in the state.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich was expected to quickly sign the overtime bill since federal rules to cut back on the number of employees eligible for overtime pay after a 40-hour week kicked in Thursday, the Chicago Tribune said.

The Senate Wednesday approved the bill keeping Illinois overtime laws as they are and sent it to the governor.

Supporters of the state bill claimed the new federal rules would deprive a host of workers of overtime pay even though they held relatively low-wage, high-stress jobs.

Opponents said it would mean Illinois would be a more costly place to do business than other states.
