Report says S. Korea impeachment is valid

SEOUL, March 31 (UPI) -- An internal report by the South Korean Constitutional Court Wednesday implied that the impeachment motion against President Roh Moo-hyun is valid.

The report said impeachment motions can be filed against the president for corruption scandals involving his close aides, even if the allegations took place before the president's term, the Korea Times reported Wednesday.

The defense has claimed the impeachment motion is invalid because it is based on unproven corruption allegations against Roh's aides.

Moon Jae-in, chief attorney of Roh's defense counsel, said: "It would have been a different story if such a claim won the majority opinion [of the court] through group discussions of researchers, but [we] believe it was just one of many research efforts."

The Constitutional Court held its first hearing of the case Tuesday and is scheduled to hold another hearing Friday.
