Report: Deal to keep Chargers in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, March 30 (UPI) -- A deal was reportedly struck Tuesday that would keep the San Diego Chargers from relocating to another city before 2008.

KNSD-TV in San Diego said the agreement between the team and the city would postpone any move until 2008, and then only if San Diego voters reject a plan to build a new stadium.

Although the San Diego Padres christen a new ballpark this season, the Chargers have been unable to prod the tax-averse city into pitching in on a deal to replace Qualcomm Stadium.

The Chargers have filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles seeking to trigger the escape clause in their current stadium contract with the city. The reported agreement would table that lawsuit.

In addition, KNSD said the Chargers would pay a reduced rent at Qualcomm, while giving up a ticket guarantee that cost San Diego $35 million in rent credits during the past seven seasons
