BERLIN, March 30 (UPI) -- German defense minister Peter Struck said Tuesday the German military will cut 26 billion euros ($32 billion) in equipment spending.
The plan calls for no cut to Germany's order for 180 Eurofighter jets, Die Welt reports.
"We are purchasing what the new military needs and cutting what no longer corresponds to the overall mission of our armed forces," Struck said.
Struck said the German military will not buy about 10,000 budgeted unarmored vehicles and will abandon its marine drones project.
In place of those expenditures, the military will buy 3,800 armored vehicles.
Those changed spending priorities reflect the massive reorganization Struck has spearheaded in the German military, shrinking overall troop numbers and creating smaller, more mobile units that can easily be deployed abroad.
Even as he announced the spending cuts, Struck countered speculation that further military-allocation cuts may be on the way. He said Tuesday's cuts are the last cuts planned.
