BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Civil Administrator in Iraq Paul Bremer could not tell Monday when U.S.-led coalition forces will be able to leave the country.

"I don't know how long the coalition leadership will remain in Iraq ... We hope security threats will be reduced and controlled totally in the coming months and years to enable the Iraqi forces to exercise their security duties properly and fully," Bremer said in an interview with Saudi daily al-Hayat, which is monitored in Beirut.

Bremer he did not know how long it would take to consolidate security.

"It might take a year or two ... Only then the Iraqi sovereign government could decide if it no longer needs foreign assistance and ask the multi-national forces to leave ... We will not stay in a place where we are not welcome," Bremer said.

"In the meantime," he added, "Iraqi security forces are being upgraded and strengthened but they still cannot deal with terrorist threats and need the backing of foreign forces to achieve security."
