FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 26 (UPI) -- The government of Cuba says that contrary to reports in the United States, the 75 dissidents in Cuban prisons are being treated well.
Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque presented two doctors who read from their progress reports on jailed dissidents, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Friday.
"I sustain here that the 75 mercenaries jailed in Cuba are treated with respect, without humiliation," Perez Roque said. "It is false that they are victims of cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment."
He also played excerpts from seven recent interviews of relatives of dissidents who said their loved ones were being given good medical care and are treated with respect.
The 75 dissidents were jailed a year ago on charges they acted in concert with the United States to destabilize Cuba's government.
The crackdown produced criticism in Miami's exile community, the European Union and the Vatican.
