PARIS, March 25 (UPI) -- A new terror group announced Thursday it was suspending its French campaign but warned of further actions.

In a letter addressed to French President Jacques Chirac an received Thursday morning to by the French Interior Ministry, the group AZF said it would stop planting bombs on French rail lines. It said no bombs remained on the rails.

The letter followed by one day the discovery of a bomb along a rail line just outside Paris.

The group warned it might later unleash bloodshed that "would surpass, without glory the sad Spanish records," if the French government didn't pay ransom when demanded.

AZF was apparently referring to the March 11 terror attack in Madrid, which killed about 200 people and wounded hundreds more.

AZF has demanded more than $5 million in ransom from the French government, but officials say they haven't paid a centime to date.

The groups apparent motives are a mystery. In its Thursday letter, AZF said it was fighting against a "deprived" spirit reigning in society.
