Haiti a hot topic for Caribbean leaders

BASSETERRE, Saint Kitts and Nevis, March 25 (UPI) -- Caribbean leaders met Thursday to discuss regional issues such as Haiti's new leadership and recent events in the embattled nation.

The Caribbean Community, known as Caricom, has not formally recognized new Haitiian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue, who was appointed to the position shortly after the nation's former president fled the country on Feb. 29 amid growing unrest and lawlessness.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed sources reported Thursday ex-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide would take up permanent asylum in South Africa after that nation's elections next month.

Aristide is currently in Jamaica, spending time with his family. The former Haitian leader fled Haiti to the Central African Republic before arriving in Jamaica two weeks ago.

Latortue was angered by Aristide's presence in the region saying it would undermine the new government's efforts to restore order. Some Caricom leaders meeting in Saint Kitts and Nevis were angered with the Haitian prime minister saying they did not recognize the nation's government as legitimate.
