NEW DELHI, March 19 (UPI) -- India Friday announced it had successfully test fired an extended version of its medium-range, nuclear-capable surface-to-surface missile, Prithvi.
The new version of the missile, developed locally by the Defense Research Development Organization, was test-fired from a mobile launcher from the launch complex in the Bay of Bengal, on the country's eastern coast, at 10 a.m. Friday, state-run Doordarshan television reported.
The semi-official Press Trust of India reported the missile has a range of 93 to 120 miles. The new version was developed for the Indian Air Force.
The test firing of the missile is part of a regular series of tests to fine tune the weapon.
The test comes amid a warming of ties with neighbor and rival Pakistan, which tested its own nuclear-capable Shaheen 2 missile last week.
