Anti-abortion sweatshirt ban lifted

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., March 19 (UPI) -- Reacting to the threat of a lawsuit, a Newport News, Va., high school has reversed its ban of an anti-abortion sweatshirt worn by a student.

Daniel Goergen was allowed to wear the shirt at Denbigh High School a month after school officials stopped him from doing so, the Daily News reported.

The ban was reversed after a Michigan law center raised the possibility of a lawsuit, the newspaper said.

The sweatshirt said on the front: "Abortion is homicide." It's back read: "You will not silence my message / You will not mock my God / You will stop killing my generation."

"It was kind of irritating, it was bringing me down a little," Goergen said of the assistant principal's decision to ban his shirt. "I respected (the assistant principal's) opinion and did what she said because she's an administrator. Then I got a lawyer to explain to her the right for me to wear it."
