PARIS, March 17 (UPI) -- French security officials are investigating a mysterious threatening letter to the government warning of "terror and remorse," the BBC said Wednesday.
The letter was sent in the regular mail to two Paris daily newspapers, Le Monde and Le Parisien, and appears to suggest retaliation for the country's banning of Muslim headscarves in public schools.
The group identified itself as Servants of Allah, the Powerful and Wise One, and warned "a heavy offensive will take place on the grounds of the allies of Satan and we are going to plunge France into terror and remorse."
The letter made no mention of last week's train bombs that killed 201 people in Madrid, but it mentioned Feb. 10 several times -- the date France passed the religious symbols ban.
It called the veil ban a "declaration of war to the Muslim world" and called on Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin to withdraw it.
Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said the letter was being taken seriously.
