Thailand to crack-down on corruption

BANGKOK, March 16 (UPI) -- The King of Thailand expressed concern Tuesday about government and business corruption, calling on the nation to help resolve the problem within 10 years.

A spokesman said the king urged all Thais to lead a modest life and be satisfied with what they had, the Bangkok Post reported Tuesday. "The wealthier you are, the more corrupted you become," the spokesman quoted the king as saying.

Sumeth Tantivechakul, who is also chairman of the Clean, Open, and Transparent Thailand Foundation, said, "Good governance has become one of the models that opens a channel for corruption in a complete way." He used the high-scale corruption of Enron and WorldCom in the U.S. as examples.

He said Thailand should base its governing style on the five Buddhist precepts as a way to eradicate corruption.

Sumeth said the king called on all Thai people, including the media, to help prevent and eradicate all corruption.
