Laid off worker wins Powerball jackpot

SALEM, Ind., March 16 (UPI) -- A laid-off factory worker from Salem, Ind., has claimed the Powerball jackpot, taking home $49 million, the Indianapolis Star reported Tuesday.

"I woke up thinking I'm going to look for a job, and I don't know where the money's going to come from," said Tim Rivers, 23. "And by the grace of God, that money came in."

He said he had a dream last Tuesday night that he would win the lottery and buy himself a bike, a new car and a house for his young family.

On Friday, he bought a Powerball ticket; 48 hours later he was seriously rich, having opted to take a lump sum payment of $49 million instead of a slower payout of $89 million.

Rivers' win marks the 32nd jackpot sold in Indiana since Powerball's inception 12 years ago.

Though the game includes 24 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, Indiana's jackpot streak far surpasses any other jurisdiction.
