Chinese DSL users hit 19.15 million

BEIJING, March 16 (UPI) -- The number of high speed DSL Internet users in China hit 19.15 million, taking the lead from Japan's 10.27 million, the Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday.

In the United States the total is less than half that of the Chinese, 9.11 million.

DSL systems run from the phone network are the most common form of broadband Internet access in China.

Broadband service provides users with download speeds up to 20 times faster than with a dial-up connection.

China Telecom, the largest DSL provider in China, sold 7 million DSL sets last year, jumping 337 percent compared with that of 2002.
