Al-Qaida links found in Madrid bombings

MADRID, March 15 (UPI) -- One of the five men arrested in last week's bombings in Spain has links to al-Qaida, the New York Times said Monday.

Jamal Zougam, a Moroccan immigrant, was linked more than two years ago to an al-Qaida cell operating in Europe and was an employee of a cellular telephone company in Madrid.

Cell phones were used as triggers in last week's synchronized bomb attacks on commuter trains that killed 200 people.

Interior Minister Angel Acebes identified the five detainees at a news conference Sunday. Investigators said they tied the men to the bomb plot following the discovery of a cell phone in a gym bag filled with undetonated explosives, the Washington Post said.

Of the five arrested, three are Moroccan natives, and two are from India.

The Moroccan suspects have provided limited information under interrogation and have asked repeatedly for copies of the Koran, officials said.

The Spanish government initially placed blame for the deadly attacks on the Basque separatist group ETA, but now suspect ETA had only a role as a supplier of the explosives, the Times said.
