King calls for terrorists capture

MADRID, March 11 (UPI) -- Spain's King Juan Carlos I addressed the nation Thursday, appealing for unity against what he called "this macabre madness that has no justification."

In an emotional address on television, the king expressed his sorrow for the numerous dead in the multiple terrorist attack in three of Madrid's railroad stations, and had words of comfort for the injured.

The coordinated terrorist attack Thursday morning left at least 192 dead and some 1,200 injured.

"Your king suffers along with you," Juan Carlos said.

Observers said it was the first time Juan Carlos had addressed the nation in 23 years. The last time was 1981, when he appealed for calm following a failed coup attempt.

Looking drawn and tired, Juan Carlos said he had confidence in the Spanish police and the judicial system and hoped "those responsible will soon be in the hands of the law and will receive the full punishment they deserve."

Earlier, Queen Sofia visited a Madrid hospital where many of the injured passengers had been taken. With her was her son, Prince Felipe and his fiancee, former TV newscaster Letizia Ortiz.
