Democrats unite behind Salazar for Senate

DENVER, March 11 (UPI) -- Colorado Democrat Attorney General Ken Salazar has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate with the endorsement of two former rivals.

Salazar, who would be the first Hispanic senator in 27 years, launched his bid Wednesday after two other major Democrats withdrew, the Denver Post reported.

Millionaire businessman Rutt Bridges and Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., joined Salazar at his announcement news conference on the Capitol steps in a show of party unity.

Colorado Democrats and Republicans have been jockeying for position since Republican Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell announced his retirement last week after reports of health problems and an investigation into allegations involving his Washignton office.

Gov. Bill Owens was considered the most likely Republican candidate but he withdrew his name from consideration earlier this week, citing family concerns and a desire to complete his second and final term.

Owens has encouraged Rep. Bob Beauprez to enter the race. He and two other members of the Colorado delegation, Scott McInnis and Tom Tancredo, are also considering the race, the Post said.

Salazar, 49, would be the first Hispanic senator since New Mexico's Joseph Montoya served from 1964 to 1977.
