Turnout low for Florida's Democratic vote

MIAMI, March 9 (UPI) -- With John Kerry virtually nominated by the Democrats, the turnout was, as expected, low Tuesday for the Florida primary.

One precinct in Broward County was virtually deserted at mid-morning.

Poll workers at a predominantly Republican precinct in Miami-Dade County's Kendall area said turnout was higher than expected though still sparse.

Poll workers reported no problems with the touch-screen machines during the early voting -- perhaps the biggest issue in the primary election.

Kerry assured himself the nomination with a string of victories earlier this year, including a near sweep Super Tuesday with nine wins in 10 states.

He still needs to collect delegates for the Democratic National Convention beginning July 26 in Boston. At stake Tuesday, in addition to Florida, were delegates from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

The ballot still includes nine candidates including Al Sharpton and Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who are still active.
