Kerry hits Medicare Rx drug plan

EVANSTON, Ill., March 9 (UPI) -- Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry criticized Medicare prescription drug reforms he says will help pharmaceutical companies more than seniors.

The Massachusetts senator appeared at the Levy senior center in Evanston, Ill., Tuesday with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is leading efforts by Midwest states to get the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve re-importation of cheaper prescription drugs from Canada.

"These issues are not words. This is not talk. This is not politics, this is life and death to an awful lot of Americans and we're going to make a difference at the polls," Kerry said.

Kerry and Blagojevich tried to explain shortcomings in the voluntary Medicare Prescription Drug Law to senior citizens before attending a political rally at Chicago's Union Station. The Illinois primary is March 16.

In Washington, U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., accused Kerry of missing 36 of 38 votes on Medicare and of scaring seniors with misinformation.
