VIENNA, March 8 (UPI) -- Strong regional election showings by Joerg Haider's far-right Freedom Party have sent opposition Social Democrats scrambling.
Regional Social Democrat leader Erwin Proll told Austrian newspaper Die Presse his party's defeat should be recognized as a strong signal for the national Social Democratic Party that it needs to do a better job communicating with regional voters.
The national Social Democratic leadership is set to meet Wednesday and will discuss its defeat in Haider's home province of Carinthia.
Social Democrats received only 38 percent of votes in the province while Haider's Freedom Party took 42.4 percent.
If Haider successfully forms a coalition, he will be the head of the provincial government.
The Freedom Party, which advocates strong immigration restrictions, deregulation and opposition to the European Union, has declined greatly since claiming 27 percent of the national Austrian vote in 1999.
Carinthia's regional election was thought by some to be do-or-die for Haider, who has drawn fire for praising some Nazi policies.
