MANILA, Philippines, March 8 (UPI) -- A private prosecutor in the Philippines claims President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo can be impeached over a case relating to deposed President Joseph Estrada.
Marichu Lambino raised the issue of impeachment over Arroyo's admission she knew Estrada was being allowed to visit his vacation villa while in detention at a nearby camp, the Manila Times reports.
Estrada, ousted in a military-backed popular uprising in January 2001 and replaced by Arroyo, is on trial on charges of illegally amassing about $73 million during his 31 months in office.
Lambino said it could be proved Arroyo "knew, consented, tolerated and connived" with Estrada's custodian for his transfer. He said she could be held under usurpation of judicial authority.
A presidential spokesman dismissed the allegation and said Arroyo would welcome any case for contempt filed against her.
"We welcome the opportunity to present our side in the proper judicial venue," spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.
