TALLAHASSEE, Fla., March 8 (UPI) -- A poll of Florida voters indicates the majority is opposed to same-sex marriages yet believe such couples should have equal rights as married men and women.

In a poll by the Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times, 65 percent said they oppose gay marriage and 27 percent are supportive. Eight percent were undecided.

Floridians are also uncomfortable with a proposed federal constitutional amendment prohibiting marriage for gays, with only 41 percent of those polled saying they would support President George Bush's push to ban same-sex marriages.

The poll sought out opinions of 800 people, 11 percent of which are undecided on the constitutional amendment question.

"What's significant about these numbers is Florida voters continue to be willing to compromise. They have no problem with civil unions," said Rob Schroth, a Democratic pollster who conducted the poll last week with Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway.
