Missing German girl may be in Turkey

FRANKFURT, Germany, March 5 (UPI) -- A witness testified in Frankfort, Germany, that he saw a young girl, believed to have been dead for three years, alive and well in Turkey.

Prosecutors allege a mentally handicapped man killed Peggy Knobloch in 2001 after he raped the 9-year-old.

A witness turned the trial on its head, however, by claiming he saw the girl last November while he was on vacation in Turkey, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported Friday.

Neither Knobloch's body nor physical evidence of her murder have ever been found.

"I am 100 percent sure that it was her," the witness, a truck driver whose name was not released, said.

The witness said he saw Peggy in a market near the Turkish city of Side. He said he noticed her since she had blond hair and blue eyes, although she was with a Turkish woman.

Upon returning to Germany, he saw a picture of the girl and remembered her, the witness said. He said there was no doubt he identified the girl correctly.
