Flights to Haiti resume Friday

MIAMI, March 4 (UPI) -- American Airlines says it will resume flights Friday from the United States to Haiti because of high demand from those scrambling to get back to the island.

The resumption is seen as a sign that the turmoil of the last month is beginning to subside. The rebels have agreed to leave the capital of Port-au-Prince and troops from an international task force are patrolling the streets.

Many Haitians who were able to flee the violence are scrambling for seats on American Airlines flights back to Haiti, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Thursday.

"The flights are very booked," said American Airlines spokeswoman Martha Pantin. "We've been down since last week so a lot of those people are rebooking."

American Airlines suspended service to Haiti Feb. 26. It will resume three daily flights to Port-au-Prince Friday, two from Miami and another from Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The airline also will resume service from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., five days a week.
