China targets human trafficking

BEIJING, March 2 (UPI) -- China announced a crackdown on human trafficking Tuesday in the run-up to International Women's Day, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

At a news briefing, Luo Feng, vice minister of public security, said China had arrested 22,018 suspects in human trafficking and rescued 42,215 women and children in the past three years.

Accordingly, Luo said in advance of the March 8 observation of women's day, the All-China Women's Federation and UNICEF were jointly distributing a cartoon brochure and videos to teach women how to avoid falling victim to the human traffickers.

Luo said the Ministry of Public Security and UNICEF had successfully cooperated in "the fight against the trading and violation of women and children" since its launch in 1999.

Investigative offices have been established in three provinces and regions to tackle the problem, Xinhua said.
