Bob Dole emerging as top political analyst

NEW YORK, March 2 (UPI) -- Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole may be 80 but he isn't slowing down: the 1996 GOP presidential candidate and Viagra pitchman is now a TV political analyst.

And a surprisingly popular one at that.

Dole, who ran against President Bill Clinton in 1996, has been appearing regularly as a political analyst on "Larry King Live" throughout the Democratic primary season.

He is to appear again Tuesday night as part of CNN's coverage of Super Tuesday, then at the political conventions this summer and on election night in November, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

Part of his success is his combination of humor and candor.

Asked by King on Feb. 3 what he thought of Howard Dean's saying he would not quit, Dole said: "Well, I used to say that, too, and I didn't really mean it. Now he may mean it, but if you don't have any money, and don't have a state where you can win to pick up a little momentum, after a while it's like W.C. Fields said one time, 'Try, try again, but then give up. Don't make a damn fool of yourself.'"
