Arabs denounce Iraq blasts

CAIRO, March 2 (UPI) -- The Arab League condemned the explosions that killed scores of Shiite worshippers in Iraq Tuesday and cautioned Iraqis against sectarian divisions.

"Secretary-General Amr Mousa strongly denounces the criminal explosions aimed at killing and terrorizing innocent civilians," said Hussam Zeki, spokesman for the 22-member organization.

"The secretary-general calls on all Iraqis to safeguard their unity and deprive criminals of any chance of tearing apart their solidarity and luring them into violence and chaos."

At least 145 people were killed and more than 100 injured in explosions that ripped through the Shiite holy city of Kerbala in central Iraq and a Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad as the Shiite community marked the religious holiday of Ashura, marking the slaying of their Imam al-Hussein bin Ali, 1,400 years ago.
