WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Colorado businessman Rutt Bridges has joined other Democratic candidates vying for the U.S. Senate seatheld by Republican Ben Campbell.

Bridges announced his candidacy Sunday, after former Senator Gary Hart and U.S. Rep. Mark Udall declined to enter the race.

Bridges, who is also the founder of the moderate-to-liberal Bighorn Center for Public Policy, says he will spend some of his own money on the race.

In 1994, he sold his computer software firm for an estimated $70 million.

Other Democrats seeking the right to challenge Campbell in the fall include Fountain school administrator Mike Miles, Denver lawyer Brad Freedberg and Boulder attorney Larry Johnson.

Campbell, who was first elected to the Senate in 1992 as a Democrat, changed parties after the 1994 Republican landslide. He last won in 1998, winning 62 percent of the vote against Dottie Lamm, the wife of former Democrat Gov. Dick Lamm.
