WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Richard Perle, a controversial and outspoken conservative, resigned from the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board last week.
Perle, a vociferous advocate for the war in Iraq, said he did not want his membership on the board to affect U.S. President George W. Bush's re-election campaign.
"This is particularly true now since I have just published a book that calls for far-reaching reform of government departments responsible for combating terrorism," Perle wrote in a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Pelre resigned his chairmanship of the policy board last year amidst allegations he used his access to Pentagon leadership to market his consulting services. He was cleared by an inspector general investigation.
Perle served on the board for 17 years.
Perle was a major advocate of the war in Iraq and has advocated a stronger U.S. hand in the entire Middle East region. More recently, he has called for the resignation of CIA Director George Tenet and Adm. Lowell Jacoby, Defense Intelligence Agency head.
Rumsfeld did not ask for Perle's resignation.
