OTTAWA, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The Canadian government said Tuesday it wants to co-ordinate economic and security policy more closely with the United States.

The effort builds on initiatives -- such as the Smart Border accord -- that former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister John Manley and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge reached after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Toronto Globe and Mail reported the proposals may include such initiatives as designing an integrated North American energy policy, a clean air strategy, and increasing the joint monitoring of sea borders and the Great Lakes.

"What's being considered is a common agenda of action; a concerted co-ordination of action with Washington," a senior Canadian federal official said.

The newspaper said Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin has been vague about what policy he seeks in Washington, however, he has said he wishes for a more constructive relationship than that of the Jean Chretien regime.
