Anti-Israeli protest in southern Lebanon

TYRE, Lebanon, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Thousands of Palestinian refugees and others protested Sunday in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre against the Israeli separation barrier in the West Bank.

More than 3,000 demonstrators shouted anti-Israeli slogans and waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags, as well as the banners representing various Palestinian factions.

Some signs read, "The separation barrier equals terrorism and racism," "The barrier destroys international resolutions and is a challenge to the international will," and "Civilization demolished the Berlin Wall and racist Zionism erected the separation wall in Palestine."

In the nearby Rashediya Palestinian refugee camp, demonstrators burned an effigy of the Israeli fence, as well as Israeli flags and pictures of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

The demonstrations came one day before the International Court of Justice in the Hague begins considering the legality of the Israeli fence.
