Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
TRIPOLI, Libya, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Friday Libya had managed to produce a small amount of plutonium using technology acquired on the black market.
The International Atomic Energy Agency report did not specify the amount, but said it was not enough to make a nuclear bomb, diplomats told the BBC.
Late last year, Libya announced it was abandoning plans to develop nuclear weapons. The IAEA has been overseeing the removal and destruction of equipment used in the clandestine program.
The Libyan revelations comes as international police agencies unravel a clandestine nuclear fuel and equipment ring that involved top Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan.
Khan, who developed Pakistan's nuclear bomb, recently admitted to giving nuclear technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya.
