ATLANTA, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry received a major boost in Atlanta, Ga., Thursday when Democratic U.S. Rep. John Lewis endorsed his campaign for president.
"I am pleased to endorse the candidacy of Sen. John Kerry," the Civil Rights legend said. "We need his leadership, his vision, his commitment and his dedication to make America and the world a better place ... I believe that John Kerry will put back on the American agenda the concerns and needs of all our people."
Lewis has represented Georgia's Fifth Congressional District since 1986 and is a leading figure in the Congressional Black Caucus. He was also one of the major leaders of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s while still in his early 20s.
CBC leaders have enthusiastically thrown their weight behind Kerry and their influence was believed to have slashed five or six points from the Rev. Al Sharpton's support in the South Carolina primary Feb. 3.
Lewis's endorsement of Kerry is seen as a blow to North Carolina Sen. John Edwards' hopes of doing well in Georgia in the state's March 2 primary.
