WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The British government will proceed with genetically modified crops though the public has opposed them, The Guardian reported Wednesday.

Minutes from a Feb. 11 senior cabinet discussion revealing the government's final decision to approve a first crop of GM maize were leaked to The Guardian.

An official announcement on the government's position is expected next week.

Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett told the cabinet during the discussion there was no scientific basis for a complete ban on the cultivation of GM crops.

"By ignoring calls for a complete ban the government will inevitably be accused of failing to listen to the views of the public," Beckett said.

While 2003 polls showed that four out of five Britons were against GM crops and only 2 percent would eat GM foods, a Mori poll for the University of East Anglia released Tuesday found that while 36 percent opposed GM food, 13 percent supported it and 39 percent had no strong feelings either way.
