Idaho gay-marriage ban may die in Senate

BOISE, Idaho, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Idaho lawmakers waited Wednesday for a state Senate committee to take up a bill banning same-sex marriage and recognition of domestic unions.

The Republican chairwoman of the Idaho Senate's State Affairs Committee said Tuesday she had yet to decide whether to give the bill a hearing or allow it expire without further action. Sen. Sheila Sorensen has until next week to make her decision.

Sorensen told the Idaho Statesman she felt the Legislature had more urgent matters to deal with and thought the bill was "bad for our state."

Idaho already has laws prohibiting homosexual marriage, but the new proposal would add it to the state constitution. The measure has already passed in the State House.

The Statesman said Sorensen is somewhat immune from any partisan pressures to hear the bill since she already has plans to move to Hawaii later this year.
