Kentucky Legislature faces gay marriage

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Gay marriage is generating more interest in the Kentucky Legislature than in previous years, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported Sunday.

Bills under consideration include a proposed amendment to the state constitution prohibiting gay marriage as well as three advisory resolutions asking the United States Congress to move ahead on a similar amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

"Marriage is an institution of a man and a woman. It goes back to Biblical issues," state Rep. J. R. Gray, a Democrat from Benton, Ky., and sponsor of an amendment to the state constitution said.

Kentucky enacted a prohibition on same-sex marriages in 1998 that was modeled on legislation passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by Bill Clinton. A number of states, including Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma and Michigan are, in addition to Kentucky, now considering constitutional amendments to prohibit gay marriage after the Massachusetts Supreme Court found such bans to be unconstitutional.
