TOKYO, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Japan says it will seek direct talks in March with North Korea over the admitted abduction of Japanese nationals, the Japan Times reported Monday.
Tokyo concluded it would be difficult to achieve any concrete results on the abduction issue during the six-way talks on the North's nuclear ambitions, scheduled to start Feb. 25 in Beijing.
On Sunday Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told two diplomats in charge of negotiations with North Korea to do their best to generate early achievements in resolving the abduction and nuclear issues.
Koizumi made the request during a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Hitoshi Tanaka and Mitoji Yabunaka, head of the Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.
The two diplomats returned to Tokyo Saturday after three days of talks in Pyongyang.
"I hope solid commitments can be made on issues relating to North Korea, including the abductions and the nuclear problem, since they are extremely important," Koizumi said. "I would like to see achievements made as early as possible."
