Roof collapses on Russian swimmers

MOSCOW, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- The death toll continues to rise in the collapse Saturday of a giant class roof over a Moscow swimming pool, killing at least 11, and injuring nearly 100.

Other news reports placed the toll at 13, with rescuers fearing more could be found in the rubble.

The collapse occurred at the Transvaal water park in southwest Moscow, the BBC reported. Heavy snow built up on roof is believed to have caused the roof to give way.

Terrified visitors rushed out into the icy cold in their swim suits, while others remained trapped in the debris.

Luzhkov said rescuers had heard voices from under the rubble at several points.

Emergency services personnel said 39 people were rushed to the hospital, according to the BBC, including three children with serious injuries.

Russian officials dismissed initial reports an explosion might have occurred at the Transvaal park.

About 600 people were at the water park when the roof collapsed at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday (11:30 a.m. EST), the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Russian television footage from the park showed concrete beams had collapsed onto the pool's twisting water slide.
