Tourists in Russian avalanche await rescue

MOSCOW, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Russian rescue workers prepared late Friday to evacuate five tourists trapped by an avalanche in a mountainous region of Siberia.

"Five tourists from the Irkutsk Region were swept by an avalanche as they were climbing Belukha mountain; three of them were injured," a spokesman with the Emergencies Ministry said.

Late Friday the tourists were near the Mentu-Airy glacier on the western slope of the mountain, officials told the Novosti news agency.

As soon as weather permits, officials will use a helicopter to evacuate the five.
