Envoy warns of European anti-Semitism

BRUSSELS, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Anti-Semitism in Europe is nearly as bad as it was prior to World War II, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union has warned.

The Jerusalem Post quoted Rockwell Schnabel's address to a Brussels dinner for the American Jewish Committee, where he stopped short of elaborating on the reference to Nazi attitudes.

Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana strongly denied the EU's policies are either anti-Semitic or anti-Israeli, describing recent expressions of anti-Jewish sentiment in the EU as "outrageous."

"The burning of synagogues, the physical and verbal abuse of Jews in the street are absolutely unacceptable," Solana told a group of 400 U.S. Jews.

The remarks by both Schnabel and Solana come in the wake of last year's controversy over charges that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Europe, which prompted the European Commission to schedule a major seminar on the issue next week in Brussels.
