GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Osama bin Laden's chauffeur captured in Afghanistan two years ago and is being held at the U.S. military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, his lawyer has said.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift said Salim Ahmed Hamdan has not been charged with any crime and denies he was a member of Afghanistan's former Taliban regime or bin Laden's al-Qaida network, the BBC reported Thursday.
The 34-year-old Yemeni is one of four detainees chosen to possibly stand trial at military tribunals.
Swift said Hamdan had worked for bin Laden on the al-Qaida leader's farm in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar since 1997.
Swift said his client drove bin Laden around in a Toyota pick-up truck for $200 a month, but he was not a terrorist.
"He has a wife. He has two young children, one of whom he's never seen. The only reason why he took the job as a driver was to support his family," Swift said.
Afghan forces captured Hamdan during the U.S. war in Afghanistan, and turned him over to American forces.
