Libyan foreign minister in London

LONDON, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Tony Blair is "pleased" with the outcome of talks he and Foreign Minister Jack Straw held in London with Libya's foreign minister.

A No. 10 Downing Street spokesman said "Britain was pleased" by Libyan Foreign Minister Abdulrahman Shalgam's visit to London and the outcome of the negotiations.

Shalgam was the first Libyan official to visit London in more than 20 years.

On a possible Blair visit to Libya, Danny Bruce, a spokesman for the prime minister's office, told UPI, "Mr. Blair's visit to Tripoli very much depends upon progress that can be achieved by the two countries." He avoided setting a timetable for the visit.

He added: "Mr. Blair spoke on the telephone to Colonel Gadhafi for the first time the day before the announcement on the 18th of December for 30 minutes."

Gadhafi announced that day his country would dismantle its program for developing weapons of mass destrruction.

Bruce denied media reports hinting relations between London and Washington have been strained recently as a result of the coalition's failure to find such weapons in Iraq.
