Peterson murder trial postponed

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A judge in San Mateo, Calif., Monday postponed by a week the trial of Scott Peterson, accused of killing his wife and unborn child.

The first court appearance of the 31-year-old Modesto man in the new venue is now delayed until at least next Monday, the Modesto Bee reported.

Retired Alameda County Superior Court Judge Alfred A. Delucchi also banned cameras from the entire proceedings. Delucchi took the case after it was moved from Modesto last month because of pretrial publicity

Delucchi granted the delay after defense attorney Mark Geragos said he had a conflicting trial in Pasadena.

That trial is unlikely to be completed by Monday, but Geragos said he would have a better idea of its schedule by then.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Peterson in the deaths of his wife, Laci, and the couple's unborn child.

Delucchi did not grant Peterson's request to have a laptop computer in his jail cell.

The trial may not stay in San Mateo County because the defense can move for another change of venue if attorneys claim Peterson cannot get a fair trial there.
